GMAT and Upperclassmen Panel

Updated: Nov 28, 2018

At the second Girl Boss meeting we discussed the importance of the GMAT and spoke to five upperclassmen about their experience in college so far, and more specifically, internships.

FCLC Sophomore Kristian Koprivica spoke to us about the GMAT exam, the test you take to get into graduate school. He spoke to us about how women are at a disadvantage in terms of the test because we are not provided with the same access and support as men. Kristian stressed that women get higher grades when they take the exam while in undergraduate school. The score is valid for up to five years, so if you plan to take a gap year or two before pursuing graduate school, you do not have to worry about taking the GMAT after graduation. In an effort to fix this disparity, Kristian wants Fordham undergraduate women to get a head start on preparing for the exam. The GMAT team is willing to give Girl Boss members review materials and more information about the exam. Hopefully with these resources we can start closing the gap, and get closer to breaking the glass ceiling of the professional world.

We also spoke to five female panelists form Fordham University. The panelists Emily O'Brien, Lariena Sun, Kristen Herb, Katherine Mills, and Alana Higa all spoke of their unique internships and experiences. From internships at Target to internships at Government level agencies, we learned that it is important to pursue new opportunities. A good source for finding your own internships is Career Services. They are very helpful and can assist you in pinpointing what direction you want to head in. During the panel the topic of being a woman in the workplace came up quite often. The panel discussed how it is important to learn the balance of being yourself, and assimilating in a mostly male-dominated field. If you need to wear a blazer, grab one in a nice print or color. If someone doubts your ability, work hard and prove them wrong. Being a woman in the professional world is daunting, but with the right mindset and attitude you can conquer any obstacle put before you.
