Julia Butler is a sophomore at Fordham University Lincoln Center, and this week she came in to discuss perfecting your pitches! She won the National Social Innovation Pitch Competition run by Social Impact 360 with her woman-centered product. After learning about the pink tax and the lack of FDA regulation in regard to menstrual products, she began researching the topic of feminine hygiene products. After discovering that 42 million women don’t have proper menstrual care products,s she decided to create organic menstrual products. Her catch was that for every product bought one would be given to a woman in need. Julia know works with Social Impact 360, an organization that stems from Stanford University. Their goal is to breed social entrepreneurs from a young age and to help them come up with pitches and at the end of the year they can participate in the pitch competition that Butler.
PITCH ADVICE
When you are coming up with a product ask yourself these 3 questions:
What is the problem?
How are you solving it?
How is your solution innovative?
When it comes to your presentation have slides with graphics and pictures and less words.
KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) - articulate your point, be concise and clear.
Emphasize the team and team spirit. Who is working with you? How are they helping you reach your goals?
Tell a story, this is not just about a product. Make audience understand your connection to your idea. What went through your mind as you came up with the product? Why do you care?
Be authentic and passionate. What about this shows that you will get this done?
Wake up your body, do jumping jacks, run in place, whatever you need to get your blood flowing.
Take deep yoga breaths from your diaphragm. This will help you to project your voice!
Don’t get into your own head - you got this girl!

If you start feeling overwhelmed: take a deep breathe, think about what you are proud of, focus on your body, and keep going. You can do this!
If your struggling with confidence write yourself a letter listing all the amazing things you have accomplished, no matter how big or small. Remember these when you feel overwhelmed!
